Balinese Culture Calendar: Galungan Day

Galungan is one of the most important celebrations in the Balinese Hindu calendar, marking the victory of Dharma (good) over Adharma (evil). It is a time of deep spiritual reflection and gratitude, as families come together to honor their ancestors and the divine forces that guide them. Homes and temples are adorned with offerings, prayers fill the air, and the island radiates a sense of harmony and devotion.

One of the most striking symbols of Galungan is the penjor, tall, decorated bamboo poles placed in front of homes, office, temples. These beautifully adorned penjors represent prosperity and gratitude to the gods, as well as a reminder of Bali’s deep connection to nature and tradition.

In April 2025, Galungan falls on April 23, bringing an extra layer of vibrancy to the island. As you explore Bali during this sacred period, you’ll witness streets lined with gracefully swaying penjors, each telling a story of faith and celebration. Families prepare special offerings and traditional feasts, while temples come alive with ceremonies that invite both locals and visitors to experience the island’s rich spiritual heritage.
